Guide
Baratza Encore ESP vs Fellow Ode Gen 2
A comparison of two electric burr grinders, using the prices and specs on the makers’ own pages.
A wider set of pour-over grinders, including the regular Encore rather than the ESP, is on the budget burr grinder comparison.
The pages that exist
The short Baratza path /product/encore-esp returned 404 on October 2, 2026. Two longer paths returned 200 the same day: /product/encore-esp-zcg495 and /product/encoretm-esp-zcg495. The product structured data on the first of those uses the second URL as its id, and the price in that data is $199.95. This article uses that structured data. It does not invent a price for the 404 path.
A short Fellow path, /products/ode-gen-2, returned 404 the same day. The live product URL is /products/ode-brew-grinder-gen-2. The page title is Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2. It is not described as discontinued.
Baratza Encore ESP
Baratza’s description says the Encore ESP is optimized for espresso, with turn-of-the-hopper adjustments and an included dosing cup. That is the maker’s description. This site did not pull a shot with it.
- Price: $199.95. The offer data lists a high price of $199.95 and a low price of $199.95, so there is not a second machine price in that block. The visible heading’s label is “Discount price: $199.95.” The same heading area also says “25% off fresh beans from America’s best roasters — Save up to $200.” That bean line is not a second price for the grinder. White, SKU ZCG495WHT1AUC1A, was marked in stock. Black, SKU ZCG495BLK1AUC1A, was marked sold out. Both offers were $199.95. - Burrs: 40 mm conical steel (M2). Burr mount: quick release. Dosing: manual. Bean hopper: 300 g (10.6 oz). Grounds bin: 120 g (4.2 oz). Burr speed: 550 RPM. Speed to grind: 1.3 g/sec at setting 10 to 2.2 g/sec at setting 30. Those two settings are the only step numbers in that line. The page’s spec list does not state how many settings the ESP has in total, so this article does not copy a step count from the regular Encore.
- Power: 100–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 70 W, 0.8 A. Dimensions, labeled width × depth × height: 13 × 15 × 34 cm. Warranty line: 1 year manufacturer warranty. Design: Seattle, WA, USA. Manufacturing and assembly: Taiwan. Safety listings named: UL, CSA, CE, EK.
Fellow Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2
Fellow’s details say Ode is for brewed coffee only, including AeroPress, pour-over, electric coffee makers, French press, and cold brew, and that Ode is not intended for espresso. That sentence is the opposite of the Encore ESP description. This comparison does not turn it into a score.
- Price depends on the burr set and the color. Gen 2 brew burrs: $399.95. Matte white with those burrs, SKU D1211MW-US-SB, was marked available. Matte black with those burrs, SKU D1211MB-US-SB, was marked unavailable. Upgraded SSP MP brew burrs: $599.95. Matte black, SKU D1211MB-US-S2, and matte white, SKU D1211MW-US-S2, were both marked available. Source: Fellow product data, checked October 2, 2026. fellowproducts.com Ode Gen 2
- The details block, for the grinder as described there: 64 mm stainless steel flat burrs. Grind adjustment: 11 settings with 31 total steps. Grind capacity: 100 g. Dimensions (L × W × H): 239 mm × 105 mm × 248.3 mm. Weight: 4.6 kg / 10.14 lb. Power: 120 V~, 140 W, 1.3 A, 50–60 Hz. Cord length: 1 m. Materials: aluminum body, plastic load bin and base, stainless steel burrs. The same details say a 2-year standard warranty with an option to extend. A line elsewhere on the page says “2+ Year Warranty.” “2-year” and “2+” are not the same phrase. This article does not merge them.
- The SSP paragraph says Ode Gen 2 is also available with pre-installed SSP MP brew burrs and that the set is coated. It does not restate diameter, wattage, or capacity for that burr set. Those numbers above are from the details block. They are not recopied onto the SSP variant as if the block had named it.
What the two pages put side by side
- Price, using only the figures above: Encore ESP $199.95. Ode with Gen 2 brew burrs $399.95, which is $200.00 more. Ode with SSP MP burrs $599.95, which is $400.00 more than the ESP and $200.00 more than the $399.95 Ode. The black Gen 2 brew-burr variant at $399.95 was unavailable that day. The white one was not.
- What the maker says the grinder is for: ESP, espresso. Ode, brewed coffee, and not espresso. A person buying for pour-over is on the Ode’s stated list. A person buying for espresso is on the ESP’s stated description. This page did not check either claim in a cup.
- Burrs: 40 mm conical steel versus 64 mm flat stainless steel. The pages do not share a micron chart, so no grind-size range is compared.
- Coffee in the machine: ESP hopper 300 g and grounds bin 120 g. Ode grind capacity 100 g. The Ode line does not say “hopper.” The ESP line does. They are not the same kind of measurement.
- Power: ESP 70 W. Ode 140 W. Both name about 120 V. The ESP also prints 0.8 A. The Ode prints 1.3 A.
- Speed: the ESP spec list gives grams per second at two settings and 550 RPM. The Ode details block does not give grams per second or RPM. Those cells stay blank.
- Warranty lines: ESP, 1 year manufacturer warranty. Ode details, 2-year standard with an option to extend, and a separate “2+ Year Warranty” line on the page.
None of that is a taste ranking. Retention, noise, and how close a setting lands to espresso or a pour-over were not measured here.
What to check on the listing
- The URL. encore-esp without a model code was a 404. ode-gen-2 was a 404. The ZCG495 and ode-brew-grinder-gen-2 URLs were not.
- Color and burrs before you read $399.95 as available. Matte black with Gen 2 brew burrs was unavailable. The SSP variants were $599.95.
- The ESP heading says “Discount price” and the offer high and low are both $199.95. There is no second machine price in that offer. The 25% line is about beans.
- Whether you need espresso. Fellow’s page says the Ode is not intended for espresso. Baratza’s page describes the ESP for espresso. Those are the makers’ sentences, not a test.
